In regards to the Scot book project you may want to reconsider some of the more gory bits of business (at least one in particular) as Penguin Magic has just recently put out The Amazing Johnathan’s Knife Through Arm which is in essence described in Scot. If you have ever seen this live it’s quite good. I think it would make for a great opener to a set of routined tricks devoted to Scot’s book. Also, try contacting Weber as he put out quite a few years back some of the original props in plastic replica form of some of the more unusual items described in the book. I once attended a lecture of his and mentioned this Scot magic set, he said he still had one (for sale I didn’t ask). But the brief conversation sort of ended that a show devoted solely to Scot’s effects would be show he would actually want to see as well. I concur and look forward to updates on this project.

Hi Edward,

Thanks for the suggestions and your enthusiasm for this project. I'm hoping it will be interesting from a historical and magical point of view. I also want to represent Scot's outrage at the witch trials, especially those in St Osyth, Essex, in 1582. This event was likely the lightning rod that compelled Scot to write The Discoverie of Witchcraft.

You may be right about those more grusome tricks, and I'm open to doing some of them. However, they don't fit my performing persona, although I might need to develop a new one for this show! Indeed, this type of trick was popular when Scot wrote his book, which is a good argument for including some of them in the show. The illustrations of the knives and bodkins are also some of the most iconic images from the book, so I'm willing to reconsider.

I have seen The Amazing Johnathan's Knife Through Arm performed on TV. As I recall, he also did a comedy tongue piercing. As suggested, I'll look at the Penguin Magic release and see if it might fit into the show.

The Scot magic set sounds intriguing; I'll contact Michael about it.

Thanks,

Marty
